Are your products really "all natural?'

Writer's picture: Hannah EastonHannah Easton

I've seen so many candles, soaps, wax melts, etc. touted as "all natural" on the label, but are they really? When I first started this little side hustle that has now turned into a business and a passion of mine, I

did a lot of research on candles and the differences between fragrance oil and essential oils. I saw so much negative feedback on essential oil candles because they were too "costly" to make. Most candle makers stated if they used essential oils they would supplement with fragrance oils to cut down the costs. I'm not here to judge anyone or their business. I think you should do what makes you happy, but when you label it as "all natural" when indeed there are chemicals in your product, that's when I have a problem.

I have talked about fragrance oils before and why I am not a fan of them personally. They are chemicals and toxins created to mimic a certain smell, lavender for instance. Not only do they have no natural aromatherapy effect, they have horrible side effects! Fragrance oils can cause cancer, infertility, nausea, upset stomach, headache, etc. I remember watching a video of a candle maker and she stated she has to wear a respirator to make large batches because it makes her sick. Yikes!

I encourage everyone to do their research when buying a product, especially when it states "all natural." In this day and age, almost everything contains "fragrance" which doesn't specify what kind of chemicals are used in it, which makes it even more scary. When I started Attar Jane I could not consciously sell a product knowing it could cause another person harm. Yes, they smell great, but at what cost?

I am an open book with my candles. Each candle states every ingredient used in it. The wax I used is 100% soy wax. I only use pure essential oils in my products. It took a lot of trial and error finding a brand of essential oils that was legitimate and pure, but thankfully I did and I am very happy with their products. Even the wicks that are used in Attar Jane candles are natural and contain no chemicals. Lastly, the flowers are as natural as it gets. Some of the herbs were grown in my herb garden and dehydrated for that very purpose to make a candle beautiful.

Creating a lovely essential oil candle was not easy. In the beginning I got frustrated, and at times I wanted to give up. Other candle makers were right, its hard, it can be costly, but once you find the right products and get the science down, it is so worth it. I am truly proud of how far Attar Jane has come in the last six months, and I pray that I can continue to improve my products. God has blessed me tremendously and I am truly passionate about what I do. To all of my customers who have purchased my candles and given feedback, thank you so much. You can't grow if you don't learn from your successes and mistakes.

God Bless,

Hannah
